Episode 14 - August 16, 2025
Valley Girl was released in April, 1983, but played in theaters through the fall. It’s another 80s film that neither Javi nor Paul had seen. What was intended to be another teen sex comedy is elevated by Nicholas Cage’s breakout performance and Martha Coolidge’s vision.
Episode 13 - August 9, 2025
Risky Business is another 80s classic that Paul and Javi avoided, thinking it was the usual teen sex comedy. 42 years later, they correct this error and are stunned to discover that this is really an art film that was marketed as another Porky’s. It’s the movie that made Tom Cruise a star. Rebecca De Mornay, Curtis Armstrong, and Joe Pantoliano fill out the amazing cast.

After back-to-back 80’s musicals, Paul and Javi welcome Krull, a genre film, to Multiplex Overthruster. While not a great film, there’s plenty to admire including Freddie Jones expertly chewing the scenery and a very young and charming Liam Neeson.

What happens when Javi and Paul, two die-hard genre nerds, watch Flashdance for the first time? Surprisingly, it’s love at first sight. Javi calls it the film Staying Alive tried to be and Paul praises it for having real heart. What a feeling!
Episode 10 - July 21, 2025
John Travolta stars in Staying Alive, the sequel to Saturday Night Fever. Broadway lights replace disco balls as Tony Manero lands the lead role in “Satan’s Alley.” The Bee Gees’ disco takes a back seat to the pop rock of Frank Stallone. Javi and Paul struggle to figure it all out, but can’t help but smile as finally, at the very end, “Staying Alive” plays out.
S2E9 - July 10, 2025
The Summer of ‘83 hits another bump in the road as Javi and Paul, still recovering from Stroker Ace, head to the Multiplex for Superman III. But alas, not even Superman can overpower 1980s sequelitis. Christopher Reeve returns as Superman who battles an evil version of himself, computer genius Richard Pryor, and greedy corporate tycoon Robert Vaughn.

Javi and Paul take apart Stroker Ace, the film Burt Reynolds admitted ruined his career. Directed by his buddy, Hal Needham, Stroker Ace features Jim Nabors, Loni Anderson, and scene-stealer Cassandra Peterson in full Elvira make-up.
